Goalies
Squirt/10U Goalies
At the Squirt or 10U age level, players that wish to play goalie are highly encouraged to also continue to skate out for hockey development. Goalies in this age group will very likely have 2 or more goalies on one team, which will limit playing time in games. At this age level it is extremely beneficial for players to continue to develop the skills that come with being a skater.
Because of this, CIHA offers players the opportunity to play 50/50 goalie/skater at the SQ/10U ages and still benefit from the half price goalie discount. In order to qualify for the discount, your goalie must play that position in 50% of the games and practices during the season.
*Goalies that register as 50/50 will need to tryout in both positions. Only one tryout fee applies. Specific tryout information will be emailed out in a packet as we get closer to those dates.*
"Many times, goalies put on the pads too early in their skating development. I often recommend that parents have their youngsters skate out as well as play goal, in order to develop the skating skills that every hockey player needs. Goalies need to be athletic in order to move around the net and be effective at gaining position, reading the play, and stopping the puck. So, at this stage of development, emphasis needs to be placed on helping your son or daughter become a better overall athlete."
